The holiday season is over and 2012 is upon us with endless possibilities. Between eating better and spending more time with your family, however, don’t forget to make a New Year’s resolution to take better care of your car. A little preventative maintenance throughout the year can save you time, money, and many headaches in the long run. Make 2012 a great year on the road by resolving to follow this maintenance schedule, as recommended by the Car Care Council:
Monthly Maintenance:
Check the condition of tires (including pressure), lights, and windshield washer fluid and give the entire vehicle a good cleaning.
Every 3 months (or 3,000 miles):
Examine the levels of the automatic transmission, power steering, and brake fluids; check the battery, belts, hoses, and cables; and make sure the exhaust, fuel, and engine filters don’t need to be replaced.
Every 6 months (or 6,000 miles):
Replace the windshield wipers and check the chassis lubrication.
Every 12 months (or 12,000 miles):
Have the brakes, steering, suspension, spark plugs, and coolant examined and replaced/repaired if necessary.
Performing this maintenance in accordance to the schedule will save you time and money while extending the life of your vehicle. If you need help, give us a call! We’re always here to help you with your New Year’s car care resolution … Visit us online at www.golto.com
Automotive Systems 101 Starting System
Ever wonder how, with a simple turn of a key, your car starts up? Well for those of you who are not mechanically inclined, this month’s article is for you! The starting and charging systems work together to start the engine, maintain power to electrical systems, and to get you to work on time on those cold winter mornings.
The process begins with the starting system as it converts electrical energy from the battery to mechanical energy via the starting motor. This motor then transfers the mechanical energy to the engine, effectively starting the car. Once the engine is started, the charging system takes over. It is responsible for generating power for the vehicle’s electrical systems by converting mechanical energy into electrical energy. The charging system is energized by the battery and then driven by the power of the engine. Once all of the electrical systems have been supplied with adequate power, the charging system sends current into the battery to restore its charge.
To prevent being stranded, it’s a good idea to have both systems inspected with every oil change or before embarking on any long road trips. If you have any questions, give us a call or visit our website, www.golto.com. We’re here to help you keep your engine revving into the New Year!
